GWS cop big blow, Demon can’t overcome ‘niggle’; superstar finally fit — AFL Teams (2025)

There’s been two late changes for two big Saturday clashes with GWS and Melbourne confirming their injury news.

For the Giants, Jesse Hogan (calf) is a late out withdrawal from the side to face Adelaide, with Xavier O’Halloran added and Max Gruzewski promoted to the emergency list.

Melbourne meantime lose defender Steven May for the clash with Fremantle due to a groin strain.

“Steven had a niggle on Thursday at training, and scans have since revealed a minor groin strain,” Demons’ club boss Alan Richardson said.

“He unfortunately wasn’t able to tick off all that he needed to during our final run today, so we’ve taken the cautious approach of ruling him out of this weekend’s game.”

Blake Howes comes into the side with Jed Adams now an emergency.

Carlton favourite Sam Docherty, the cancer survivor who made an inspirational return late last season from an ACL injury, has been dropped as one of three changes at the struggling Blues as Harry McKay (concussion) and Brodie Kemp (knee) also miss.

In comes Blake Acres, Elijah Hollands and Lewis Young for the Good Friday clash with North Melbourne.

In the second match of the night, West Coast have dropped second-game defender Sandy Brock as one of four changes. Skipper Oscar Allen has been managed, while Bailey Williams has been replaced by Matt Flynn.

Veteran duo Tim Kelly and Jeremy McGovern return as Peter Wright gets the call up for the Bombers in place of injured Nick Bryan.

Winless Melbourne have responded to their attack woes by axing forward trio Jacob van Rooyen, Bayley Fritsch and Jack Henderson for their clash with Fremantle. Tom Fullarton is set to be the main tall target.

For the Dockers, Oscar McDonald will face his former club as replacement for the suspended Pat Voss.

GWS will take an unchanged line-up into their match against Adelaide. Nick Murray is one of two changes for the Crows with James Peatling suspended and Lachie Sholl dropped.

The Suns have recalled Connor Budarick to take on a Tigers outfit bolstered by the controversial inclusion of star Noah Balta.

Balta is one of three inclusions, including prized pick Sam Lalor while Jacob Bauer, Tyler Sonsie and Jacob Blight have all been dropped.

Balta is just three days away from being sentenced on an assault charge for which he has pleaded guilty, with prosecutors seeking jail time though this is viewed as extremely unlikely.

Bulldogs skipper Marcus Bontempelli has been named for his first match of 2025 after overcoming a hamstring issue while Liam Henry returns for the Saints.

The Swans have named Justin McInerney, Aaron Francis and Lewis Melican for Sunday’s match against Port Adelaide.

The Power meantime make one change with Darcy Byrne-Jones returning from suspension.

Meanwhile Brisbane has unveiled another exciting debutant while Collingwood regains a star but manages a key recruit for their blockbuster Easter Thursday clash to open Round 6.

Sam Marshall, another promising midfielder from the Lions Academy, will play his first AFL game after being brought into the side along with James Tunstill, replacing Will McLachlan (omitted) and Bruce Reville (injured).

Marshall, a 19-year-old from the Sunshine Coast, was taken with pick 25 in last year’s draft after Brisbane matched a bid by Sydney.

Playing alongside Lions teammate Levi Ashcroft on the junior pathway, Marshall was best-on-ground in the Sandringham Dragons’ Coates Talent League premiership win, with 28 disposals and two goals in the Grand Final.

Marshall will be one of five Lions Academy graduates playing on Thursday night, alongside Eric Hipwood, Harris Andrews, Jack Payne and Jaspa Fletcher.

At Collingwood, Jordan De Goey returns after missing the Gather Round win over Sydney due to inflammation in his ankle and Achilles. He replaces Tim Membrey, the forward recruit now being managed himself.

Magpies coach Craig McRae flagged on Wednesday evening De Goey may not play a full game as they take care of his body.

“We’ve looked after and managed him. He’s still a work in progress, we might just have to see what that looks like in terms of time on ground, but he’s an important player for us,” McRae said.

The Geelong vs Hawthorn teams will be announced at 6:20pm AEST on Sunday.
